If you notice the kids going uphill all the time, it's because this particular area of Athens, Plaka, is literally built on the hill leading up to the sacred rock of the Acropolis :)

On re-read, I got the (plot) significance of the murdered dude's face being so savaged. (First read, I was too busy screaming thinly and cowering behind the 8th Ammendment.)
